Mission: Ignition serves to ignite love in us for the community around us. Mission: Ignition is a week-long emphasis at The Avenue where everyone is challenged to serve and love others. We plan several projects and gatherings that allow us to meet new people in our community and pray over our city. Mission: Ignition also challenges those who have existing relationships to go further in sharing Jesus and serving others.
Mission: Ignition Service Projects
We’ve hosted a variety of service projects during our Mission: Ignition weeks. Service projects are a way we can break out of our comfort zones and simply serve others. Some weeks we serve together as a large church body; other times life groups and families serve together. Some Mission: Ignition projects have involved:
- Raking leaves in Independence, MO neighborhoods
- Assembling “goodie” bags of chili ingredients, Thanksgiving meal ingredients, teacher supplies, chocolate chip cookie ingredients and more
- House and warehouse clean outs.
- Hosting a free picnic in a low-income housing neighborhood
- Hosting a Swap & Shop event
- Trail cleanup at Jackson County parks
- Hosting neighbors for an outdoor BBQ or dinner party
- Serving at community-wide events as volunteers
- Garage sale shopping for the Rachel House
Mission: Ignition Prayer Gatherings
Throughout the week of Mission: Ignition, we host prayer gatherings. Led by our missional team, these serve as a way to cover our cities in prayer. We meet in homes, coffee shops, donut shops and other private and public places throughout the week to pray for our cities and relationships.
Worshiping during Mission: Ignition
At The Avenue, we are committed to teaching that worship is a lifestyle; not just a service on Sunday mornings. To show that serving God is an act of worship, we do not have Sunday worship service on the weekends of Mission: Ignition. We encourage families to serve together and use the opportunity for relationship building on Sunday mornings.
The Avenue’s Kady Mason leads the planning for Mission: Ignition weekends. With ideas for projects or questions about Mission: Ignition week, please contact Kady.
